Name: Liam McCowell
Service/Agency: Hamilton Police Service
Rank/Title: Constable
Years with LETR: 6
Constable Liam McCowell has been a proud member of the Hamilton Police Service (HPS) since 2019. His roots to policing are sewed deep as he is the son of retired Peel Police Staff Sergeant Sean McCowell. In early 2022, the restrictions for COVID were beginning to be removed and life was beginning to return to normal, as were LETR events. In Hamilton, the popular ‘Hell In The Harbour' endurance run and ‘Cops N Rodders' car show events were reborn and ready for continued success. It was at this time that Liam was recruited to assist with both Hamilton events as the organizers of these events knew of Sean McCowell's passion for LETR and Special Olympics, thus it was only fitting to have Liam begin the journey of participating with the Hamilton Police LETR Committee. Without hesitation, Liam graciously accepted the invitation and jumped in with both feet, saying “Sir, I would be honoured, I cannot believe you are asking me… this is a huge honour, thank you so much – I will not disappoint.” Liam brings his passion and personality to these events and provides the participants with a day they never forget.
At a young age, both in life and career, Liam brings years of volunteerism with him and uses his infectious personality to bring others together so Special Olympics and LETR can be the benefactors. During the winter of 2023, Liam wanted to improve his health and encouraged his squad mates to join him. As a valued member of Division 20 – B squad, a co-worker felt that this could be made into a valued challenge. If Liam succeeded with his goals, then she would give $500 to the charity of his choosing. If Liam failed in his goals being achieved, then he would have to give $500 to his co-worker's charity of choice. Don't ever count Liam down and out – ever. Not only did his squad get behind him, but Liam's (and others') goals were achieved and the $500 bet turned into $2000 being raised for LETR in support of Special Olympics.
Fast forward to 2025, with Liam now being a dedicated member of the HPS LETR Committee. He and another committee member took on the challenge of creating the first ever Polar Plunge fully organized by Hamilton Police, This Polar Plunge didn't disappoint in its first year, raising over $22,000. Liam will be the first to forgo the kudos and accolades and redirect them to the others that helped him and supported him in making the event a success, but the rest of HPS wants to highlight his efforts. In short, the Hamilton Police Service and the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics are in great shape for many years to come with Liam's participation.
