Sault Star
Kristen Bonenfant is getting swept up in anticipation for the Special Olympics Ontario 2019 Provincial Winter Games.
The curler from Sault Ste. Marie wants to compete in her hometown when the city hosts the games Jan. 31-Feb. 3, 2019.
“It's great that I can do this for my home city,” said Bonenfant.
Bonenfant participated in the Special Olympics Ontario 2001 Provincial Summer Games in the Sault. Her sister, Karen, and mother, Val, helped coach track and field, the sport Bonenfant competed in.
“It was great having my family to come and watch,” Bonenfant told The Sault Star of that experience 17 years ago.
She's travelled the country as a Special Olympian, competing in events in Ontario and Saskatchewan. In 2016, she curled in the nationals in Corner Brook, Nfld.
She's on one of two Sault curling teams to vie for a spot at the Ontario competition at provincial qualifiers in the city on March 10.
