2027 Special Olympics World Games

The Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg® for the 2027 Special Olympics World Games, Santiago, Chile. The 2027 LETR Final Leg will require a commitment of approximately 11 days for selected Team members. Team members will tentatively fly to Chile in early October 2027, and will tentatively be relieved of their Final Leg duties October 18, 2027 to travel home. At the time this document was prepared, exact dates for the 2027 LETR Final Leg had not been finalized. As soon as those dates are solidified, the Final Leg Planning Committee will notify all programs. There is no expense (other than incidentals) to the selected individuals or Special Olympics programs. All travel, uniform kits, lodging and meals are covered by the LETR International Executive Council and the 2027 World Games Local Organizing Committee. This application is to be considered as a member of the logistics team. The deadline to submit your application is June 14th, 2026 at 11:59pm (EST).

    Applicant Requirements: (MUST READ AND AGREE TO) FINAL LEG LOGISTICS TEAM MEMBER SELECTION PROCESS o Nominated individuals must be active members in good standing with the local LETR program, or be a Special Olympics employee who has LETR responsibilities within the program, or an employee who has made significant contributions to the local LETR program o A Selection Committee comprised of the Final Leg Management Team (Team Captain, Assistant Team Captain, Route Leaders, and Operations Manager) shall make the determination on which individual(s) will be selected to the Logistics Team o The number of individuals selected shall be determined by the Final Leg Management Team based on the number of routes and overall scope of the Final Leg. The selection(s) will be based solely on the information provided in the Logistics Team Member Nomination Form SELECTION CRITERIA FOR LOGISTICS TEAM MEMBERS o The submission of a Logistic Team Member nominee by a program is strictly voluntary o Programs submitting a nominee must have a Torch Runner participating in the 2027 Final Leg o Programs are encouraged to select a nominee who has not previously participated on a Final Leg in any capacity; the goal is to provide someone who might not have an opportunity as a Torch Runner, to experience a Final Leg o Must possess a valid driver’s license, and be able to acquire an international driver’s license if required by the LOC o The nominee must possess a passport for travel to Chile valid for at least six months beyond the last day of intended travel (valid through April 2028) o The nominee must have a demonstrated ability to function as part of a team and be able to follow instructions and excel in a team environment o The candidate must be able to lift at least 50 pounds (22.68 kilograms) repeatedly over the course of a day and throughout the Final Leg event o The nominee must possess the stamina to tolerate days that start very early and end very late. They must also be prepared for long days of travel, special events, have the ability function on a highly flexible schedule, and tolerate possibly hot and cold temperatures (Chile has many climates) o If the nominated individual is a volunteer LETR member, the nomination must have the program Torch Run Director’s endorsement that the nominee meets all the requirements to participate in the Final Leg event as delineated in this information package. The endorsement will be acknowledged in a check box on the nomination form o Special Olympics employees nominated must also have the endorsement of the Program CEO, which will be noted on the online nomination form as mentioned in the previous bullet o The selected individual(s) will be required (at a later date) to provide proper insurance and medical information to participate in the Final Leg o The nominee must be able to participate for the duration of the Final Leg SELECTED LOGISTICS TEAM MEMBERS DUTIES o Selected individuals will participate on one of the Final Leg’s Advance Teams. Each will be responsible for assisting in the assembly of branding materials and the loading of all related equipment into the Advance Team vehicles o Greet arriving Torch Runners and Athletes as they arrive at the airport and/or the hotel o Assist in the distribution of credentials and uniform kits at the first hotel o Loading and restocking water and snacks each day on all motor coaches o Setting up and breaking down branding materials, such as backdrops, feather flags and banners at each of the ceremony or run start locations o Maintain all written copies of Torch Runner and Athlete speeches and ensure that those speeches are available to the speakers at each ceremony o Maintaining and organizing all gifts given and received by Torch Runners and athletes for speeches, and safe delivery to the respective team members o Ensure identified restroom facilities at each run start and ceremony site are open and available for the team o Ensure bottled water (provided by the LOC) is available at the run start, and especially at the ceremony site o Provide reconnaissance at each ceremony and run start site for staging the Final Leg Team upon arrival; assist in guiding the team into each ceremony location o Maintain communication with the Final Leg Management Team (Captain, Vice-Captain and Route Leaders) if conditions are not as expected o Assist the Final Leg Team in check-in at all hotels; which consists of gathering room keys from the hotel and reconciling with the Team Rooming List o Breakdown and offloading of all vehicles at the conclusion of the Final Leg o Participating in the Opening Ceremony for the World Games The Logistic Team Members are the backbone of every Final Leg Team; however, it is far from glamorous. While the Final Leg is a life-changing experience, the work of the Logistics Team is arduous and exhausting. All nominees must be prepared to work tirelessly in the pursuit of making this Final Leg the best it possibly can be.
