A torch led more than 100 police officers, students and others through the streets of Cornwall on Wednesday morning, causing people to come out of their businesses or lean out their apartment windows to watch the procession go by.
It was the annual Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run, which was organized by the different police agencies stationed in Cornwall to raise money for the Special Olympics.
“The Special Olympics is the charity of choice for the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police,” explained Cornwall Community Police Service Staff Sgt. Brian Snyder, one of the event’s organizers. “Its a way of raising morale for the officers and also assisting the community by helping people with disabilities.”
Students from St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, and St. Lawrence Secondary School, as well as the members of Beyond 21 all came to participate alongside members of the Cornwall Community Police Service, OPP and RCMP.
One of those students was Dave Williams from CCVS, who was one of the several people who got to hold the torch as they made their way from the Cornwall police’s east end station on Montreal Road to Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer on Ninth Street East.
Williams said he was pleased to take part in this year’s torch run.
“It’s very important, and it happens every year. Also, it’s a very nice day today,” he said.
