Cop braves freezing pool, Miami Vice outfit for Special Olympics

For York Regional Police’s 1980s-themed polar plunge for the Special Olympics, Duty Insp. Alvaro Almeida dressed as TV show Miami Vice detective Sonny Crockett.

But his blue t-shirt and cream-coloured linen suit did nothing to ward off the freezing cold temperatures of the pool outside the police association headquarters at Stonehaven and Bayview avenues in Newmarket the night of March 9.

With the temperature at the time of the event in the -5 C range, it’s no wonder the plunge under the stars event was billed as “freezin’ for a reason.”

A total of 58 plungers, including five Special Olympics athletes, raised about $21,000.

Over the last five years, the event has raised about $70,000 for the Special Olympics.
