The Special Olympics Barrie representative will run into the icy waters of Kempenfelt Bay as part of the annual Polar Plunge, which takes place during Winterfest weekend.
“I’m willing to risk my life for (Special Olympics),” Helmond said jokingly, standing along the shoreline on Jan. 24. “Special Olympics is part of who I am. It’s part of my family. I’m so happy because I’m doing what I love to do.”
The plunge is hosted by Barrie police and the city, and proceeds benefit Special Olympics Ontario and Barrie Trojans Swim Club. A few hundred people are expected to plunge and organizers hope to raise about $10,000. The local effort is also part of a series of plunges that run across the province each winter held under the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ontario banner.
