Special Olympics Sarnia athletes ‘buzzing’ with excitement after attending Sting hockey game
Last Wednesday the Sarnia Sting OHL team welcomed Special Olympics Sarnia into the ‘hive’.
Athletes had the opportunity to sit on the Sting bench, ride in cars on the ice thanks to
partnering with Lambton Kia, and go on to the ice to participate in intermission activities.
Special Olympics Sarnia, lead by Community Coordinator Tana Manchester, had a booth set
up at the game, with information on programming, and a raffle with items donated by the Sting.
22 year old Sarnia athlete Edward Zalewski was selected to do the ceremonial puck drop
before the game.
“I’m a big hockey fan and I support my city. This was my 36th home game and my first time
dropping the puck. I got to shake hands with the two team captains and fist bump the sting
players when they came out of their dressing room. It was fun! I was a little bit nervous
because it was a big crowd and I knew I’d be on TV, but I could hold Tana’s hand and she
helped me relax. I was very happy to keep the puck I dropped and it’s on display at my house
now. It was one of my best Sting games I’ve been to in my life! I got to go with my sister and
see the Sting mascots too!”
