Sgt. Carol French with Provincial Corrections (Quinte Detention Centre) is no stranger to the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) having been involved for over 32 years! How did it all start for Carol? “When I first learned about the LETR, I was helping to enlist colleagues to attend the run and raise funds for our local Special Olympics athletes. After getting the chance to meet with the coordinators and organizers, seeing their enthusiasm and determination, I was hooked!”
For Carol, it’s the athletes’ drive that inspires her to continue to do what she does. “Many bonds of friendship and community partnership have developed over the years, and I have had so many special memories over the years, attending conferences, finals legs, games and more.” Carol’s involvement is truly all about the athletes: “receiving the Distinguished Service Award from Kevin McBean was indeed my favourite memory. At my request, Kevin travelled to Greater Napanee to present the award in the presence of our local Special Olympics athletes. To accept the award on behalf of the athletes is a day that will remembered always. Following my retirement in a couple of years, I hope to remain a part of the organization!”
When asked what Special Olympics means to her, Carol said “Special Olympics is so appropriately named. The athletes are truly special people. To see their smiles, hugs, tears and high-fives brings me to tears as well! Long-time LETR member Ted Farr once said “it is not what I have given to Special Olympics, but what Special Olympics has given to me” – I share his sentiment.”
